Soccer

WMAA offers two levels of soccer play for its members, both of which are offered in the fall and the spring sport seasons.  Fees, registration dates, and more information about each of them follow:

Fees:

  • Fees for travel soccer are $75 for the U9, U11 and U13 teams, and $90 for the U15 team bracket.  In addition, there is a $30 family fee that is charged beginning with winter basketball registrations that covers all children and adults in the household for all WMAA sports for a year (winter basketball, spring soccer, summer Ultimate Frisbee, and fall soccer).
  • Intramural fees are $45, in addition to the $30 family fee described for the travel program above, if the family has not already paid it.

Registration dates

Registration for WMAA's fall travel soccer season is now closed but intramural registrations are still being accepted.

NOTE:  For parents registering for travel soccer, unless they have been formally evaluated by the travel coordinator and impacted coaches, kids should be registered for the youngest team allowed based on birthdate.  Upon formal evaluation, WMAA may approve a move to an older age bracket if warranted.  Registrations that don't meet these guidelines will be adjusted upon receipt to align therein.

Late fees of $20 are currently in place for the intramural registrations.  Please register by selecting the 'Register' tab.

Recreational Travel:

This division is managed through the Frederick County Youth Soccer League (FCYSL), of which WMAA is a member. WMAA must abide by its rules, guidelines, and deadlines as a participant in its program.

The recreational travel teams:

  • Play 8 games in each of the fall and spring seasons,
  • Travel throughout Frederick and other local counties for weekend games, and
  • Have the opportunity to participate in various tournaments throughout each of the seasons if offered
The longest travel distance for a game averages 30 minutes, although several of the games are played on our Home field at Doub's Park in Myersville. Travel teams practice twice each week and games are held on Saturdays, although an occasional game can be scheduled on a Sunday.

Shin guards and cleats are required in order for a child to participate in the travel program. WMAA provides uniforms for each of the players as part of the registration fee, which are returned at the end of each season.

Recreational travel teams are available in the following age groups, if enough registrations are received:
  • Under 9 (U9), co-ed (calendar year 2009 birthday or later)
  • Under 11 (U11), all girl or co-ed (calendar year 2007 or 2008 birthday)
  • Under 13 (U13), all girl or co-ed (calendar year 2005 or 2006 birthday)
  • Under 15 (U15), all girl or co-ed (calendar year 2003 or 2004 birthday)

NOTE:  Unless a child has been  formally evaluated by the travel coordinator and impacted coaches, registration should align with the player's birthdate requirements noted above.  Upon further evaluation, a player's placement could be shifted if deemed appropriate.  Any registrations not meeting these guidelines will be adjusted by WMAA to align therein.
In addition to the FCYSL teams, WMAA also offers a Girls U14 Club team that participates with the MSI organization. There are 8 games throughout the season, all of which are played in Montgomery County Maryland.

All recreational travel coaches are required to pass a background check and to attend Class E soccer training. WMAA has also offered CPR and first aid training to its coaches in the past to better prepare them in case of an emergency or sport injury.

Intramural:

This division is a more informal program managed internally by WMAA, intended to introduce young players to the game of soccer and to acclimate them to working in a team environment before advancing to the Recreational Travel division as a more experienced player.

The intramural teams also play 8 games in each of the fall and spring seasons, but they are all held at Doub's Park in Myersville at a consistent time on Saturday mornings. There are no practices during the week. Each Saturday session lasts for an hour, with the first 30 minutes focused on drills and game fundamentals and the second 30 minutes scrimmaging other intramural teams. The younger age bracket plays from 10-11am and the older bracket from 8:45-9:45am this season.

Intramural teams are organized into two age brackets:
  • PreK/K
  • 1st-3rd grade
Once kids reach 4th grade, they are required to move to the recreational travel division to continue playing soccer. Players may move up to travel prior to 4th grade depending on skill level. There is no minimum age requirement for the kids to play on the PreK/K teams. WMAA leaves it up to the discretion of the parent to determine if their child is ready to effectively participate.

Shin guards are the only thing required in order for a child to participate in the intramural program. Cleats are recommended, although the kids can play in sneakers. WMAA provides shirts for each of the players as part of the registration fee, which the players get to keep at the end of each season. Teams may be sponsored by local businesses. In those cases, the sponsor's name will appear on the back of the team shirts.

All intramural coaches are required to pass a background check. WMAA has also offered CPR and first aid training to its coaches in the past to better prepare them in case of an emergency or sport injury.
